Ok friends I have never had to think about this as I don't leave home during the burning season, I have a very early camping trip planned next weekend ( Sorry HB but Its been 4 month without a trip and we are going though withdraw  ) that will have the Glenwood home alone for about 50 +Hrs so do I run it down starting Wednesday until its out or do I give it a good shake down Friday morning and reload set for a slow burn and hope it will be revivable on Sunday? It sucks to clean out a stove with 30+ pounds of unburned coal VS starting from scratch!
Any .02$ is more then welcome :D

If I still had my 983 I wouldn't even be asking this as I have run it that long and was able to reload it( it took some babying it but I did it) That is one thin I miss about the Hitzer.
I was kinda thinking the same thing but I'm still not sure.

Let it go out. To restart just shake down, scoop out a hole in the middle of the coal left and put in some paper and charcoal for a fast restart.

Grab a bag of pea coal. Shake it down and load it up with straight pea from the middle back and a nut & pea mix in the front. I also build the middle of the bed up about 6" and close down the primarys to a sliver.

I run the #8 at the shop like that on weekends when I'm not going to be down there on Saturday or Sunday.

Got many 50+ hour burns in the last two heating seasons.

On Monday I open the mpd and the ash door and throw on a small shovel of coal. I don't shake it down until it starts coming back to life, but sometimes poke a hole or two along side of the hot coals down to the grates to give it some air.

Barry, I agree with franco and FF.. Let it go out, otherwise you will be wondering "what if" and it can drive you nuts. I have a Van Wert stoker and usually I stay close to home during coal burn season ( 100 miles) and I can even see it on the internet and can turn it
off remotely if something goes sideways.. Just set your crappy 29 year old heat pump to 55F and enjoy a safe trip ! Ken

I think I'm going to try the paulie way and see what happens, If the fire isn't salvageable then I'm going to do what Franco said .
I'm going next weekend Fred but I will post the results. Thanks for the input

Ok people i set the stove with buckwheat pea mix ( thats what i had on hand ) in the back and a mix of pea and nut in front and on top of the buckwheat mix, set the primaries to about 3/32” and both MPDs to 3/4 to 7/8 closed.
Now we wait and see if i have a salvageable fire on Sunday?

Barry,
I'm setting my #8 up for the weekend and found that after 24 hours the center of the bed sinks down a few inches. Since I'm not running a magazine, I heap up the middle with a rice/pea mix. I also completely close both mpd's especially since it's been really windy here the last few days.

Have a safe trip and hope to see a recoverable fire when you get back.

Paulie

Somewhat slower to reload but it wasn't any problem because I followed Paulie's recommendations :D .
Thanks again everyone for all of your input.

Here is mine this morning at 61 hours. Shop temp was down to 66*f and took about an hour to recover.
