man, I guess there really are benefits to having a 1/4 of a 55 gal. barrel of coal in the stove and just leaving the pilot light on. LOL

It's also nice to be able to idle it down during this three day warm spell rather than start out building a new fire.

Paulie, I borrowed your idea, adapted it to my box stove, and threw on some smaller coal and fines (nearly dust but not quite) I’d been emptying in another bag and I placed it in the middle of my box stove length wise leaving the back and front free from fines as much as possible.
This morning I have 233F just above the front doors and 178F just under thermostat in the back...and it was 70F outside yesterday. Spinners cracked, draft open just a smidge. As of right now it’s 62F at 8:12am. Manometer reads .015 and his morning. Today will be warm and back to mid 50’s with lows in the low to mid 30’s. Feeling lucky to still be in the one match club. An old antique stove is looking sweeter all the time.

yep, just what I've been doing this week, today is our last day in the 60's, over night will be 33, 40's by Monday, probably run out the rest of the month that way.
april will probably be dicey with usual added moisture, I hate damp and too cool for comfort.
