Hi , l have had my baseburner on for over 2 months ,24 hrs a day , burning around 40 lb of coal over 24 hr period . My primary air is opened less than a 1/4 of its full potential, and the check damper is out around 1/2 it’s length . Temps are around 85 in the orangery which is nice and warm . We are having a cold spell (for the uk ) around -6 degrees, so I decided to push the check damper in all the way , and slightly open the primary air . About 15 min later the firepot was glowing dull red . Took the firepot temp and it was 830degrees, and the fire itself was 680degrees. I pulled out the check damper to half way and slightly reduced the primary and it went down to around 580 within 10 min . My question is considering you have so much primary air to play with and I’m sure some people have the check damper in When running there stoves, it seems to me that you could over fire the firepot and damage the stove . I suppose my question is what is a safe continuous temp to maintain your firepot at ? Normally I run it around 550, or am I being over cautious about the firepot glowing red and temps around 830 ? Last thing I want it to damage my stove . Any opinions gratefully received.

The fire pot should have a thin layer of refacortory. Will help protect the pot, so it lasts another 100 years.
830 is a pretty orange color.
I just missed a Wehrle 106 bb on Tuesday. Another 25 bucks it would have been mine.

In my Acorn 12 I always run my check damper closed. I adjust the draft with my stove pipe dampeners. This works best for my setup. Pipe temp when it enters the chimney normally around 100. Temp on stove at exhaust port above firepot 450. Burn about 30lbs a day. When I was running my Florence 153 it ate 40lbs a day like clockwork.

Looks Great, what a great stove. I’ve been looking for a 14 square baseburner. My Imperial Acorn is just too big for my setup.

Only a 12 inch square baseburner, for sale that I know of, bunch of 14 inch and over classics.
Everything way over priced at this time.
