Hello
I’m new to this forum and new to parlor stoves. I bought Germer Radiant Home parlor stove model 70 AD on eBay.
Had it assembled and hooked to a metal chimney pipe to outside. I get good draft after lighting some paper in chimney pipe, good draw from fire box burning kindling wood.
My problem- lots of smoke seeping out at top around plate that covers coal shute.
I don’t know what to do. Cannot use parlor stove like this. Unsafe.
Any help much appreciated. Have 3 feet snow today.
Thanks
Fred

The lever must be down to start fire. Right side of stove upper door hinge area.
See picture.
Push the trophy top to the left. Look underneath. Is it flat under there or is it hollow like. See picture.

Can you post some pictures with the swing top removed?
Also pictures of the coal magazine cover plate in the up and down position.
As Artie stated the stove must be in direct draft mode until your fire is established.

Hi
Thank you for trying to help me out!
I’m not familiar w antique parlor stove terms.
I’ll put more pics tomorrow.
I am sure how to open and close the blocker in chimney pipe. That was open. Had good draft. Was sucking paper and flames towards it.
Now the air valve on from bottom I had open and left open whole time too.
That leaves a sort of switch top right back- that seems to block either top or side is a heat vent. Seems smoke comes out of that from top too. I tried that switch in either position. Not sure which way was better.
Now bottom right there is rod to pull. One position opens a vent behind ash pan bottom back and other way closed it shut. I played w that too. Not sure what or when or why to position it.
Main problem as I said is that smoke seeps out from top under finial around a rectangular metal plate that you can lift out which covers over shoot straight down to dented of coal pile- I guess top loading coal Shute. In my mind, maybe there is supposed to be a cap to put on the bottom of Shute to keep smoke out?
Also, the ash crank is missing, can I use a vice grip until I get one from eBay?
I bought bag anthracite coal.
Thank you
Fred

Addendum:
I guess I need instruction on what to open and what to close and at what point in firing it up. Have 4 variables- chimney pipe, front bottom air vent, vent at back of ash pan and that kind of grill area in front of chimney pipe that has a switch.
Thanks

Oh
Yes I know to open the door inside to chimney pipe to get draw going up chimney. That was open whole time.

Get stove ready to start a test fire. Little newspaper, twigs, sticks. Bigger than a bird nest, smaller than a chicken nest.
Make sure manual pipe damper is open in black smoke pipe. Handle up/down position.
Shut check damper, push rod in on side of stove. Its in the ash pan area, side wall or just under fire pot in the back wall.
Flip down direct/indirect damper. Trap door thing above fire pot, right side hole.
Open ash door spinner one full turn.
Open right side big door. Stick hair dryer in the right side hole. "Trap door hole". Let it run on high for a few minutes.
Quickly shut that door, hit your kindling with a match.
Hopefully the hair dryer will jump start the chimney draft.
