Hand Fed Coal Stove: Umco 212 Pot Belly

Post by George D » Wed. Nov. 25, 2020 8:25 am

Hi, I stumbled onto this site looking for more information on coal stoves...seems very informative, I'm glad I found it...hoping to share and contribute to the forum. I came across this pot belly stove on Craigslist, it's a London No.40. Has anyone ever owned or heard of these stoves? It has no spinner vent in the center, so I'm wondering if this was ever made to burn coal. I don't recall if it had a shaker grate.
Structurally, it has two small cracks that need to be welded, and if anyone ever welded cast, I'd like your feedback on the process...is it hard to do? Will it last? Thanks beforehand for any help.

On the fence on whether to purchase. But if I do, I'll post more photos. Definitely coal? Even with no spinner vent?

What spinner vent G?--ya got slider vents on ash door (bottom) coal draws from the bottom--not top. Plus shaker nub on rgt. side. Hell, it's lasted this long!! LOL Might be mica on loading door??? Looks like a real good lil stove if $$$$$$$$ is right.

Not an airtight stove, so hard to control. Grate must be whole and workable. Where are cracks? Very cheap or pass on it.

Attached a photo of the vent. It's called a draft vent spinner, it's on the center of the stove. What's Mica Fred? It looked and feeled like paper.

Franco, one crack can be seen in the photo where the top meets the main body...its by a bolt. Look to the right of the loading door. Other one is above the ash pan, center.

It was just that, thin like paper, but wasn't clear, just black. Interesting.

Likely what Fred said, especially if someone was burning wood in the stove.

Try soaking the mica with white vinegar, then wipe with paper towels. If that doesn't clean it you can buy replacement mica sheets and cut to size with regular scissors. Here's one supplier.

Welding cast iron is not easy. Needs a special nickle welding rod and someone experienced in welding cast iron, or trying to just weld it like it was steel will just cause more cracks.

I know. I just thought that all coal stoves had that spinner vent in the center. He did sell it, I feel it had too many issues for me. I need something in relatively good shape that I can put to use immediately...so I'm still looking and I'll post my findings. Thanks everyone for your input, much appreciated.
