Welcome SWD.
Pretty much everything you need to know about how to operate a range has been covered in this thread, "Cookin' With Coal".
Cookin' With Coal
If there's any questions you don't see answered, don't hesitate to ask. I've been using a coal range for the last 15 seasons and my Wife grew up with one. We not only heat with it, we do all
the cooking/baking and more with it for 9 months of the year.
We have other members that do similar, including some that also repair/restore coal ranges. We've yet to have a question that couldn't be answered.
And as Fred said, pictures !!!! We love stove pictures.

Nut coal is the most common size used in ranges. Next choice is the larger stove coal, if you need a hotter fire to cook/bake with. But because of having more air space and less coal in the firebed, stove size won't last quite as long as nut coal before needing to refuel the firebed.
Comparisons and results are discussed in the Cookin' With Coal thread.
