Hi guys

This is going to be my operation, fuel use and impressions thread after getting the #6 home from Pauliewog’s on the 25th

Might not be too informative, after all the updates on the house this year it may never get off idle but, we may set a new burn duration record

More later
steve

After much research and then modifying some more modern stoves into base heaters and proving there is an improvement to be gained, Steve has finally decided to try an actual antique base heater - Glenwood #6.

Somehow, I think all he'll be gaining is a prettier stove, 'cause he did very well with his proof-of-concept Frankenstoves.

11 is simply the number of days till i can get it here, I only built or modified 2 stoves but the threads on those turned into Greek epics :what: Hopefully this one will be more concise since we won’t need to cover the how and whys,

You may be right SB I’m scouting for a Merry Bride type / size stove as we speak

A Merry Bride next, huh ?

Good choice of words, "Greek epics". You seem to be on an Odyssey - the Odysseus of coal stoves. It's made interesting reading following your adventures ! ;)

Not a Merry Bride specifically but a mica radiator with clam shell grates, 12-14 inch fire pot, magazine and especially in the case of a 12 incher, a double heater feature

There are many stoves of this type made by just as many makers from the late golden era when the science of coal fired heat was in its fullest expression of form and function

Anyone who has followed my path here from box stoves thru back yard knock offS of design concepts knows how long it’s taken to make it as far as a GW 6 so there’s no telling when another stove might come along

Gotcha. I was just confused over 11 vs 10. I'm glad to see you're on another project. The boards have been slow over the summer, and this is my relaxing before bed reading. I was looking forward to some more volume of light reading. Of course, if the coffee isn't doing it for me, I go to the movie thread to get riled up.

Steve weren’t you running a Crawford 40?

You will enjoy the #6.
I like mine because I can Do so much with it.
burn wood or coal.
Take the chill out of the house on an raw fall day or Heat the house as hot as I need it in February.
Cook on it and dry soggy boots.
It’s like having a Swiss Army knife in the corner of my living room.

CCM, thanks for the input.

i'm sure it's very capable and possibly too much for my house now but I can always change if I have too.

I also have some ideas on improving it so it will be installed at least a year .

So.... because I didn’t make the #6 a priority this summer and have been betting on beating the weather break to get it here this fall I’m kind of behind the eight ball on the house being just to cold from dawn to 10-11am

To deal with that I dumbed down FRANK and started him up this morning. To do this I removed and caped off the back pipe and ran the smoke pipe out the upper exhaust collar and into the thimble. I left the double heater shrouds in place for now.

This will get us past the crummy weather till we leave for PA and give me a way to get a fire going the minute we are back. It will also let me bring the 6 in from the sun porch beside FRANK and be throughly dry and warmed up when the house has a heat soak and I switch them out.
