Other Heating: Outdoor wood burner

Post by Lilith-616 » Fri. Sep. 11, 2020 2:41 pm

Hello all,

I recently purchased this Gem City Stove Company Clermont 518 and have had such difficulty finding any information, on the co. or this model. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

It needs some TLC but the firebox is in good shape and my partner is on board to get her up and going. It reminds me so much of the miniature stove I played with at my grandmother's as a very young child. I've always dreamt of using a cast wood or coal stove and I cannot wait to bake the first pie she's fired in (what looks like) many, many years. :D

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

Welcome Lilith,
Can't tell you much about the Gem City company. From the style I'd guess your range was built in the teens or twenties of last century.

What I can tell you is there is a lot of info on coal ranges and how to use them, in the, "Cookin' With Coal" thread, here. Cookin' With Coal

If you can post pictures of the firebox and other inside areas, and we can help you with what condition it's in.

Nice cooking range!
I have seen a few free standing coal stoves by Gem City Stove Company of Dayton, and one cook stove that I thought might have been made by them, but this is the first range I have seen. I have not been into antiques for very long so there may be plenty more out there.
I am near the Dayton area, and am a little curious about that company. I have done a number of internet searches for them, but the name is fairly generic and seems to be no digitized information about them. I have yet to try the public library and universities in the area. I hope to get around to trying that next year.
Dayton has a nickname of being the Gem City, hence the stove company's name.

I enjoy photos, so please share more! (close up of the thermometer, does the back side have any decoration, et cetera)

Finally put in the effort at getting access through the local library to the Dayton Daily News archive.
I have only looked at eight search results of the possible ~3000. Each page is a PDF, and it is slow.
Anyhow, the advertisements have little information on any particular product and few small depictions.
The few advertisements I saw so far were sort of a notice to the public that a selection of Gem City Stoves will be on exhibit at *** store or bank for the public to peruse. Other than the obvious Clermont brand name, I am not hopeful of finding anything of detail for them and their products.

found some online archived photos yesterday

of the company's building

illustration of the factory from 1897, they must have been in business for a while to have this many buildings

aerial photo of Linden and Davis avenues, looks like they were on Linden Ave and Todd St corner

of a cooking range, though not of the 518

of a fancy parlor and cookstove, also not a 518

photo of the finishing department, equipment is before electrification, looks like there are some baseburners in the photo to the right, hard to make out

photo of belt driven grinder, probably from same photoshoot as above, baseburners clearly in view in the background, workplace injury anyone? I had wondered if they made any baseburners, it appears so.

photos of the finishing department, equipment after motors installed, so I think that means grinders are electric
rows of parlor stoves, waiting to be fitted?
