Hand Fed Coal Stove: Crane 404

Post by dcrane » Thu. Aug. 13, 2020 2:43 pm

Just found an all original Crane Coal Cooker in great shape (with original Fasco blower & blower shroud & MINT condition nut grate) for $50.00 on the Cape. Since I have left over gaskets & paint from the 404 project and I happen to have some old buckets of refractory doing nothing, i will pull out the firebrick molds and make this one brand new and ill have a second plant stand for the house!

You sure must have a big empty house to just fill it with stoves and plants.

😂🤪

removing old brick just plain sux... get a bar and sledge and just start smashing a point behind the brick by which you can start prying (then clean out and vacuum).

making new brick (you need a mold, most people cut a 5 gallon bucket to make the mold), if you happen to live near me i dont mind loaning you my molds if you wish to make 44 firebrick. dont forget to slick up whatever mold you have with oil (i happen to have bar & chain oil handy and it was cheaper than olive oil  )

finally a few photo's showing new firebrick installed (note the gap between the grate edge and the firebrick), Im asked all the time when to replace the firebrick on a Crane 44 (the answer is, when your loosing chunks of coal between the grate & brick).
Now I just have figure out a way to paint in silver the Crane nameplate on the front (stencils? free hand? im not sure...)
