Hi , Just Wondered if anyone is running a baseburner with a firepot size of 12”x10” ? If so how much heat will it produce , and what size room will it comfortably heat when the temps dip below freezing .

Member *lsayre* has posted earlier somewhere a way to calculate BTUs/hr/grate size and of course that can then be converted to metric kWs/hr.

There are some guys on here with base heaters with fire pots close to that size. Hopefully they will join in.
FYI, grate size is misleading for heat output in that it does not take into account the difference in depth of firebed for total BTUs being produced, nor stove design radiating ability.
Not all base heaters have the same size grate as the "listed" diameter of their firepots. With many, such as the Glenwood #6 & 8, Herald, and other similar design base heaters, the firepot tapers down to being a couple of inches smaller at the grate than the top of the firepot.
With the suspended firepot type base haters the firepots tend to be cylindrical, so pot size is very close to grate size.
Then there's big differences in heat extracting abilities with the different designs.
My GW #6 GW base heater firepot has twice the coal capacity of my small sized GW range firebox, but the range has much more internal flue length and surface area to radiate heat before the stove pipe than even the largest base heaters. It keeps more heat indoors and less wasted up the chimney. Even the mano readings show that. As such, it can almost heat as much area as my GM#6. It just can't do it for as long before needing to be refueled.

That's not the post Mac was referring to that Larry had been part of.

I'm heating about five rooms "comfortably" (around 64-65F) with a GW #6 Base heater that has a tapered, brick lined pot of about 13 inch ID at the top to about 10 inch at the grates. And about 11 -12 inches deep. Holds a measured 50 pounds of nut coal. If I closed all the doors and just use it to heat the uninsulated 15 x 18 living room that it's in I'd have a Swedish sauna, even down below zero F.

The New Royal globe has a 12 inch fire pot. It heats almost 1285 square feet to 74-76 degree F down to about 10 degree F outside temp using nut size.
Not a base burner, but 360 fire view.
Lillian 110 is a mica base burner it will do about the same, but have to push it harder. It's a 10 inch pot.
Member Panned has an Alert Acorn with a 12 inch pot in a mica base burner. Pauliewog has a Home Stove Works same size also.
SB is correct on varables with stoves with different built in functions.

The stove in question is the grand glenwood 1894 baseburner that I was asking questions about . Does anyone run one of these stoves ?

It’s really a crapshoot because you have not posted the construction details of your house, unless I missed that!
My house is 2450 sq ft, built in 1995, has 2x4 exterior walls and The Crawford 40 I ran for several years would make a huge dent in the heating oil bill....

Wal,
Yes, member Wilson (aka Skip) screen name wilsonswoodstoves, had Glenwood Grand restored set up to one of his many chimneys, when I was at his place. He also had the GW #6 I bought set up in another room at the same time. In fact I lost count of how many stoves he had set up in the many rooms of his house - some rooms with more than one stove. If he fired them all up at the same time,... I think global warming would no longer be just a theory.
I'm sure he can tell you more about how well it heats and how it compares to other base heaters.

The area that’s needs heated to would be 30’x30x20 but I like the room very warm . I’m just interested to find out if a stove with a firepot this size could keep a room of these dimensions very warm when temp are around freezing. The catalogue print is the stove I was looking at . Many thanks .
