Bill, it is Jubilee Jerry that uses old piston rings as filler material when TIG welding cast iron.

Yeah...was just reading his Werhle thread the other day.
I thought he used some special square welding or brazing rods though. First I’ve heard of the old piston rings though. I must have missed that.
Was just wondering how the repair went after Wilson fixed this. Somehow must have thought at some point it was Wilson who used the square rod.

Jubilee Jerry restores old farm tractors, so he has a ready supply of old, worn-out cast iron piston rings. As a result of reading his thread showing the excellent results he gets, I started saving the old piston rings from the antique auto engines I restore.
It was someone else that posted about a source for cast iron welding rods to be used with gas welding. I bought some and they are square. Haven't tried them yet. I have some cast iron parts needing welding to experiment with when I get room on the work bench to weld and not set fire to anything.
