Direct draft Baltimore Heater

Were there ever any true baseburners among the baltimore heaters / latrobe stoves?
I noticed in the screen grab of the "Perfect" 1888 Fire-Place Heater catalog entry, it says "Revertible-Flue" "Base-Burning".Pauliewog wrote: ↑Mon. Nov. 16, 2020 4:12 pmI haven't seen any or ran across literature describing an actual base chamber under the ash pan.
I think in adding an additional two inches or so to the overall height of the heater in order to install a base chamber would result in a reduction of the firepot depth .
These Baltimore's are usually a pretty tight fit in most if not all fireplace openings to begin with.

Paulie, in your experience, did you notice anything that qualifies as baseburning on the Perfect insert you have/had?

Just noticed this thread this morning. Beautiful Stove! Nice to heat with a piece of art. Merry Christmas!
The seller of that Baltimore heater out in Massachusetts (Morning Charm) included a photo of the back with the center exhaust pipe off/missing. The exhaust path setup looks like it may be the same as the Parlor Sun.
It looks like the center port is the direct draft path??? (anyone know?, maybe Scott / Paulie)
but that looks much smaller than the two side indirect pipes.
Is that center port big enough for the exhaust on startup before the stove heats up enough to close it and switch it into indirect draft?

The only other Baltimore I'm aware of that has a direct damper similar to that is the Sexton, manufactured by S.R. Sutton Stove Works.
I feel the opening is sufficient for direct draft, but I would anticipate a smokey startup. Not a clue why they decided to place it that low. The top load doors on these Inserts are far from airtight.
The Morning Charm is also missing the direct damper and mpd linkages and the mpd damper housing.
The seller told me he only gave it a coat of stove polish but it was not taken apart and resealed.
