I have an Andes combination range. How do I re-calibrate the bottom oven thermometer to accurately measure temp? It was full of rust dust, and getting off the cover was a challenge, had to slice the bottom to do it. Got it cleaned up prettily, but when I put in the wife's oven it was reading way off. How do I fix this without bending the needle? Obviously, the back will be a bear to remove (without some magic) to access the innards for tweeking.

If it's the bi-metallic spring type, very likely the spring has lost range of movement through years of flexing. Nothing can be done if that's what happened without having to open the case to replace the spring. You see the same loss of spring travel happen with the old automatic chokes of carburetors in the 1960 and 70's.
If it's the type with a series of connected brass rods that expand and contract to move the needle you'll have to open the back to see why they are off.
