Are you burning wood? Take care you don't want to warp those grates. Still burning early June, where are you John o' Croates.

Ah, memories ... a steam boat on the Lake, Welsh coal driven that I got ripped off with. The damned thing never ran right but it was fun boating in the rain. In Yorkshire, we ran an AGA 365 days a year. Sheppards/steak and/or kidney pies in the oven warming all day. and pre CAMRA beers served in the coal miners working mans club in S. Elmsall. I still have 2 original bar billiards tables. I think I will go and have a game or 2 on my own. Having a wife who is a horse rider in the summer is a little lonely. Spent the afternoon mowing with my David Brown tractor made in Melksham. 60 years young and runs like a top.Ha ha , No we live on the north west coast of England , near Cumbria and the Lake District.
I need a scotch....

Sounds like your home sick Don’t know where in the states you live , but when it sunshine in Yorkshire they say it’s god country , but like most of the north west if we get a couple of sunny days we think it’s summer , in between the rain and cold .

Not home sick, I am happy here. My training in the UK conditioned me for living here in unimagined amounts of rain.. We will match you inch for inch and then some. Back to the stove so we don't bore everyone.
Now that the Coalbrookdale foundry is closed those grate fingers, which warp easily, will be pricey. Keep that ash bin on a regular emptying. Good luck with the stove.

Hi , Bought a full set of grates off eBay for £175 . The original ones are in excellent condition , so I will put the new ones away to be used when needed . Wife said that when it was first installed the stove was smoky, I explained that with new seals /cement /polish etc , these things need to be heated to burn off any residue . So today I thought I would fire the stove up myself and check everything is ok . Started with kiln dried kindling, then birch kiln dried logs. When the fire was established, put 3or 4 scoops of excel smokless ovoids on . No leaks anywhere and the stove is ticking over at 500f. Check out the photos . Really pleased .

Wal wrote: ↑Fri. Apr. 05, 2019 8:25 amHi , Been looking for ages for another stove to replace my esse dragon in the orangery. The dragon is a Fantastic stove , ornate and gives out a good heat output. But since we have opened the back of the house up by knocking out a couple of walls the dragon is struggling when the temp dips below zero. As in my previous threads I love the American baseburner stoves but can't afford to ship to the uk with import duty , tax etc. So managed to snag a coalbrookdale Severn stove . It looked in the photos to be in good condition only needing cosmetic work , new glass / rope seals , etc . The riddling bars were in good condition and the seller assured me there were no cracks or breaks in the stove . So I pulled the trigger and bought it . It arrived yesterday on a pallet and I have put it in my brother in laws garage to refurbish it . The condition is amazing , really pleased . Blimey the cast iron is thick , and it weights 500lbs !!!! So a quality stove , when quality actually meant quality . It says it will heat a area 10,000cubic ft which will easily heat the back of the house . Few pics of it being delivered . Will post more when it's been refurbished, and installed . To be continued.

The fender is beautiful, as are the hods.
But,.... the poor Severn is now made rather plain-box looking by those stunning accessories. A glow from the firebox will help reestablish it's prominence.
Have you fired it up, yet ?

Thanks Paul for the kind comments , yes had it running for around 10hrs when I first got it installed just to gauge the heat output , but as I said it’s been to mild at the moment , roll on the cold weather ha ha .

Scrolled back up and saw the pix of the Severn with a fire going. Yeah, it'll hold it's own against all that added glitter.

Hi
Have you managed to burn it over the winter?
We moved into a house in the summer with a Coalbrookdale Severn and initially we were burning ovals. It burned really hot and depending on the wind we were getting through 24-32 kgs a day. A neighbour suggested burning large welsh anthracite and during the day it works well but we’re finding overnight is difficult. It’s still burning in the morning but when we try to build it back up it’s dying on us. Just wondering if you’re having any better luck?
Thanks
M

Hi , I’m burning about 25kg a day of excel ovoids . I fill up first thing in the morning , then shake down around 10.30pm and fill again . That’s takes me thru till around 9am, when I empty the ashpan . I have the air inlets on number 1 . This gives me a heat output on the front of the stove of 650 f which with a magnetic flue pipe stove fan heats the whole of the back of the house . The smokless ovoids are quite large so it gives the stove plenty of air in between and subsequently heats the stove up really well . Haven’t used anthracite as I find excel smokless a superb product that produces great heat and everything turns into ash , so no clinker buildup . You will know how much air to put thru your stove as the glass is always clear when it’s burning at its optimum rate .

Hi Again - Just to say I get excel smokless from my coal merchant for £8 - 25kg . So if my maths are correct the stove is running constantly for around 33p a hour . Which considering the area it heats I think is quite economical.
