And more importantly how does a guy go about buying a base burner without getting ripped off? I know nothing about them. It's not being used nor is it hooked up to a pipe. How can I tell if it's complete and not just assembled with parts missing ? I seem to have a habit of unwittingly buying stoves missing things... Lol.

Base heaters are not overly complicated. And they shared a lot of similar design features, so we have members who can very likely figure it out if they can see it.

Can you post pictures of it ? All four sides and shots of the grates and inside the ash pan area ?

Then, if it's determined to be complete, all you have to do is inspect it for cracks.

There aren't any pot pics on the post. Just these. I'll work on getting some.

If it’s anything like the New England stoves bring a good make up mirror and flash light and look at the bottom make sure the bottoms not broken or missing cracks can be repaired, pull the ash pan out and look at the floor under there too

Well I'm not sure what a bargain price would be for one of these. This is not base burner territory. This is the first one I've come across but I haven't been religiously looking.

One thing I know is the name tag on it is definitely home made.

Doug from Barnstable Stove had a Grove Andes #14 at his shop.

His had a single tile on the front reflector bonnet and a different finial.

I was suspicious of the finial. I could live with the cosmetic issues. I'm more interested in function over form. What would be a good price to offer if the internals are good?

Here's a Phillips & Clark Oakvale Andes finial. Looks pretty close.

Actually, my opinion is the correct finial is on the stove you are looking at.

If the stove was nearby, and the firepot and grates are servicable, with no visible cracks in the castings, my initial offer would be $600 .

From that point I would deduct $50 per crack, no matter how small.

If the firepot, grates and ash pan were in excellent condition , I would consider spending $800.

VERY pretty stove !!!

Enlarging the pix, it looks like it has everything externally that should be there. No holes showing something missing. All the door handles and hinge pins match. I can't see any cracks. It doesn't look like it's been abused. The direct/indirect damper handle is not sticking off at a weird angle that would indicate a broken damper axle.
And yeah, that name plate looks like a summer camp project. :D

So, next is,.. what's it like inside ?????

Looking at the décor, here's a picture of what I suspect is Doug's (Barnstable Stove Shop) Grove Andes on Pinterest. Note the price.

Pauliewog if someone could score that stove for $800. you would be the only one. I have been suspicious of your ability to do the Jedi "mind wave" thing anyway and this suggestion only deepens it.

I was about to say something similar, Steve. :D

If the inside is as good as the outside, and I was still looking for a base heater, I'd pay a lot more to get a beauty like that.

Come to think of it, I did pay alot more than that. And thanks to Wilson, it was worth it !
