I have read a lot of the older threads, and I see where many of the antiques have refractory lining, but this reduces the fire pot capacity. Also many grates appear to get worn out.
Are there any alternatives to using refractory liners?

I am not suggesting it, but I happened to see a Jay Leno's Garage episode where they had sent off sheet metal to be plasma coated for use in a steam generator.

Pm Scott, (Scalabro). He's had some of that high-temp coating put on the new firepot of one his stoves.
