Hand Fed Coal Boiler: Union Stove Works "Flirt" No.12

Post by JohnnyDanger » Wed. Nov. 07, 2018 6:24 pm

I "restored"/ modified this stove last year. I recently fired it up for the first time and have been running it for, maybe two weeks. This is my first coal stove (burned wood in my shop prior). Any advice on getting the most heat out of it would be great. I honestly scoured the internet in how to run one properly, to no eval.
thanks in advance,
-John

Yes, the cylinder was trash so I ordered a stainless steal chimney liner made from 316L. I sand blasted all of the cast iron, and nickle plated what needed to be.

It's a 24 gauge, 12" X 36" stainless steal cylinder. The original was a thinner sheet metal at 12" X 28". The thinner, original material needed ridges pressed into it to stay structurally sound.

What does your firepot look like? We're you able to reuse the old one?

I have no idea... I never would have imagined that a stove body could be that thin.

i personally think it might be. i've seen some pretty thin original barrel skins.

my other thought was that on larger stoves the barrel isn't nearly as close to direct flame contact.

since your stove is pretty narrow the barrel sides are fairly close to the flames but with a settled coal fire it might not be an issue.

seems you'll just have to keep an eye on it structurally and i am certainly hoping for the best.

I had to make a cast iron grate, and lined the fire pot with two layers of chimney flu, held together with refractory cement.

is this a full time heater ? i'd love to see the grate, are you removing ash by riddling above the grate thru the clinker door ?

this is getting better the further we go.

Steve,
No it only heats my shop when I peck around after work and on weekends. I had a wood burning 30 gauge barrel stove in here for years, but I can't leave well enough alone. I bought the "Flirt" and "Rose" off of a gentleman last year and decided to try my limited skills on the "Flirt", because it was in way worse shape than the latter. As far as the grate is concerned; It came with none. I had to make one out of one of my beloved restored cast iron pans ( I can hear you laughing now). I drilled about 15, 1/2" holes underneath and scrub the bottom of it with a poker to empty the ashes.
