So many questions! I got this from a neighbor lady. It was a fun winter project to keep from getting cabin fever. Took it to the sandblaster man. Then wished I had taken it all the way apart so he could get in all the cracks. I took it all the way apart & finished sanding the rust with my dremel tool. Purchsed some Thurmalox & painted it. I just put it back together today & I just love it! This was a very satisfying project! There is coal laying all over the ground here. We are on an old coal camp in SE Ohio. Once was one of our country’s biggest coal producers- Little Cities Of Black Diamonds. My family were Haydenville people. The last company town in Ohio. I sometimes throw coal in the woodstove with wood. Is there any reason I cannot just collect it off the ground & use it?
Photos show my stove before, during & after restoration.

How do I know how much coal to put in there?
Will I be able to find/purchase chimney pipe to fit the weird oval hole?
How will I know if it is air tight enough & not going to kill me?
Is this grate save-able?

I will follow your post. Let me know how the cement part goes. I will likely need to do that too. Do you know the age of these stoves?
