I have tried pea in my DS circulator. My only complaint was losing too much coal through the grates when shaking. I will have to try it again just for fun, maybe poke from the top and be more patient with the shaker handle.

Yes, good point. I do less shaking myself. A few pokes from above and some floshing drops 75% of the ash...I learned slow and stead wins the race when it comes to using pea coal.

Glad to hear you got it tuned in Mikey. Calming the fire down on these warm days with a smaller sized coal always worked well for me also.

I dump 5 pounds or so of rice in the magazine when reloading before I shake it down. At the shop in the stoves without magazines, I would bank half or more of the firebox with fines.

Just wanted to comment on your idea Mike. As I mentioned, I don't have any pea coal to try, but I do have many pounds of fines, so this morning, the oats were climbing to almost 50°. !st I had to "find" my "fines", and once I "found" my "fines", I "flicked" some " fresh fines" on my "fire", and "found" my "fire" to "finally feeling" like it wanted to "fickle". I was "flabbergasted", but had to "forgo" any "further or future feats", because of previous engagements. :baby:
But in reality, it really did seem to put a cover over the heat, but because I was out most of the day, didn't benefit much from it. Hope to be home tomorrow/today, and if it warms out, I'll try it again.

I think RB meant "flossing", but it came out wrong as he was eating an apple. :D

hahaha! sorry I meant to say flossing, poking from under the grate with a 4 inch right angle rod. I was doing my Sean Connery impersonation...check it out, "I was shitting in a chair" LOL!
