Just a big hand-fired furnace. Would have had a sheet metal jacket around it with ductwork. Had one just like it in my dads shop for 20 years.

I wish they'd left the octopus furnace that had been in my basement. Two steps from the coal bin and able to heat 4K sq feet of house without need of electricity.

and I think it's in nice condition. Of course, a mere detail is that I have no idea if it is even for sale. 4k house in the North Pole with no electricity is very appealing if the power goes out all the time. Ugly, I never saw a coal stove I did not like. Installing one sounds like a nightmare and you need tons of room. Convection does not work with small tubes. Would I buy house with one in ... yep ... but this time I would not be so stupid as to remove it.

My house still has the over-sized duct work. They just rearranged some and adapted it all to the oil furnace. They only ductwork I took out was the 1 x 3 foot cold air return chaise built into the dirt floor. The chaise had just a tar paper covered dirt floor, with brick lined walls, and covered over with 4 x 4 slates cemented in place. That lead to a 24 inch round brick hearth that the firebox had been sitting on.

They did take out the original coal bin, .... but, they left the old carved, wooden handled coal shovel with the coal-worn metal edge.
