Is a Galvanized barrel safe?

Using a micrometer, some of the old barrels are about equal to today's 18-20 gauge mild steel. I'd go with at least 22 ga.,... 20ga would be better if you can find a shop that will make it.

The beads are about an inch wide and shallow. They are rolled several inches from the top and bottom edges. And they stop short of the front edge so that the door frame casting has a flat surface to seal to.

Sometimes, the bottom edge of the barrel has a short 90 degree flange to clamp it in place where it sits in a shallow groove in the top edge of the firepot.
