Ok, I'm tired of reading about you guys having all the fun and I'm ready to dive in and try my hand at a restoration. Love the heat from my modern stove, but want to have something that looks as good as it heats!

I'm a DIY kind of guy, so I've been searching for a good candidate and came across this one
https://harrisburg.craigslist.org/atq/d/antique-v ... 30280.html

I know it's tough to say from a few pictures, but hoping you good folks can give me some opinions on if it would be worthwhile or keep looking...

If there's no cracks, it should be a fairly straight forward restoration, ... with lots of elbow grease to get all that rust off. ;)

It looks like it's got a big firepot. Likely big enough that there's room to put a refractory liner in it to boost coal burning efficiency and still be able to hold plenty of coal.

And it has a double heater jacket that surrounds a good bit of the barrel, not just a jacket on the rear only. That could be ducted to heat another area by convection.

A little practice and those dump grates will work. There's a few guys on here that have stoves with the same type grates and can give you pointers.

I love stoves that have the double heater outlet on the top! You can send heat to the floor above.

Man cave downstairs and living room directly above it, so should work well in my setup. Not a baseburner that I was hoping for, but been searching for months with no luck yet.

This is the first stove that isn't too far gone for a novice like me to handle that has come up in my searches.

Hold out for a base burner you will thank us later........... :D price of a base burner vs a plain old oak will pay for its self in coal savings with in a few years time at most. But then you will want to replace your mark 2 with a base burner as well, after you see how the first one sips coal

I'm trying to hold out. Started my search after seeing a Glenwood all polished up and looking great.
The shop can use a stove as well, so I figured I could cut my teeth on this one and keep looking for the base burner

i have this stove and did a restoration on it, the guy that did mine is in new Hampshire and did a great job, this stove is kind of hard to control burning coal as the ash door at least on mine does not have a great seal, i am still working on new gasket system this year. but you need to make sure that stove is sealed, mine when i first tried coal ran away uncontrolled and scared the C out of me. i be glad to tell you what i have done and there is post about it here as well, is your complete with all the tools that came with them?

Haven't tried the NE area, thinking I should be able to find something local. PA is coal country after all.
Thanks for the tip on the the ash door

You jut have to keep your eyes open and set up an alert on Craigslist.

I picked up a few project be burners in the Williamsport State College area for $400 or less.

I'll send you a PM next time I see one in your area.
