Yeh, but I don't know anything, and "The Mystery of the Missing Draft" was fascinating. I would like to hear more about the copper pot that was beside the stove and the carriage house and the ten foot ceilings. And all the things that have been cooked on and in that Beechwood....

It has been one of the most rewarding experiences in my life meeting all of you and the "greatness" of Paulie. I'm retired and worked 43 years of my life. My home is my life. Paulie and his wife would confirm that! If you have never cooked breakfast eggs on a kitchen coal stove or tasted them, try and get that experience. They turn out like 'silk' to the palate. Things are back to normal here and I'm so happy. My past few days have been experimental for me with the stove since it's been about 5 years since it held the draft. The past two mornings I woke up to it going out - not because of "oxygen deprivation" but almost purposefully on my part. I'll explain why. I don't want anything to change and reluctant to push the ash through the chute and possibly getting a jam again in my slide. So I actually don't run downstairs early in the morning where I could catch the fire, rake it, and add coal. This is just a temporary thing with me til I get 'my wings' back as they say. So while it is out, I then I hand shovel the ash from the fire bed into a bushel measure container and carry the ash outside and start up a new fire. It's ok as long as I don't run out of kindling! It's also giving me practice again starting up the fire. All is well. I consider perhaps eliminating the ash chute and using an ash pan but that is for another time. I'm not making any changes at the moment, just thinking about things. Yesterday I paid a personal visit to my coal hauler of the past. He gave me a few 5 gallon containers of coal to try and it's burning beautifully. Paulie suggested that I use the larger size coal as in the past I would have tons delivered which still are in my coal bin of nut and pea mixed. I used that coal for both my Kewanee and my kitchen coal stove for about 30 years so I still have a lot of that stock piled in my bins. Since the coal is beautiful I ordered a delivery of just the large nut. It's the perfect size. I use the other mix to cool it down a little if I have to do that.. Like I said I'm practicing again but it all comes back to me very readily. It's like riding a bike!! I wanted this way of life for my retirement where I could finally enjoy my home and all I worked for and without that kitchen stove there was so much missing. I am just so happy now. I'm even cleaning out the kitchen cabinets! I just want to be near my stove. Paulie in his post mentioned a few suggestions he has for spring and I would look forward to having that done. Paulie, I don't remember the handle on the left side draft getting so hot to touch early on in my experiences with the stove but I do remember after I patched up that side with furnace cement couple years ago that I noticed the handle being very hot. That tells me that I didn't do the best job possible in repairing the fire brick inside the fire box. Perhaps redoing both sides with new fire brick would satisfy that and look even more beautiful inside. It's so nice and warm inside and temperatures are in the 30's here in Pennsylvania outside. It's a beautiful day and I hope to get some of my shrubs trimmed in my Arboretum. I love doing yard work and transplanting things around. I've been behind due to an injury but slowly getting there! Answering "Wren". I'm the 3rd owner of my home in 150 years so it hasn't been chopped up. I purchased my home from the daughter of the 2nd owner who lived here 1926 until I purchased it in 1977. When I initially visited the house there was a copper water tank next to the stove but that got sold before I bought the home. I was working and in college at the time so I was in no position to buy the contents. I was fortunate to buy the home and it took a number of years to re-plaster, re-plumb, re-electric, and restore the interior. I did all the planting around the environment by myself and 40 years later it all looks exactly like I envisioned it to be. I also was forced to by several adjacent properties to protect my investment, tore the structures down, and landscape them as well. My ceilings are 10 feet high so I live daily with a ladder. It's not a home where you can just take your curtains down, wash them and put them back up. It involves ladder climbing. I'm very actively involved in my home and I have had a career as well. I juggled both and it all worked out. My Carriage House is a magnificent 2nd structure on my property. After 1800's the livery stable was removed and the Carriage House took its place. By the way after many years I had my home nominated and placed on the National Register of Historic Places. I loved my home from a child as I used to pass her with my parents never thinking I would own it. It needed a lot of love and care. I think I've been the perfect person to be here and have never regretted it for one minute. My girlfriend who I grew up with moved back to this area and we talk a lot. I didn't know she wrote poetry but she did one about me. She remains anonymous with her poetry. I think she should publish. She has a talent to put something together like she did and email it to me following a long phone discussion we had. I probably should write a book too but seems we all have dreams and then life comes at us fast. I hope I've answered some of your questions..... Have to rush off. My rain gutters are being cleaned today and they just arrived.... They are copper. I restored them too..

There is something other in your story that transcends the ordinary. Both you and the house have become part of each other. Back, back, to a different time and ethos.

I would urge you to read anything by "Jack Finney" who shares your love for the spirit of an old house.

Hello. Just to let you know I had a load of coal delivered today. Paulie thought it might be a good idea to use a larger size coal. I used to get nut and pea mix for the Kewanee and the Kitchen Coal Stove. Although I have a lot of that left over, I wanted to start off with a fresh load. I'm set for the rest of the season.
