Worried about cracking a frame to get it out? Or worried about cracking during use?
As you might have noticed, when cast iron gets that burned up it swells and gets all those small cracks - called "crazing".
I wouldn't reuse that firepot. I'd see about temporarily patching that burned-out area and use that pot as a pattern to have a recast made. The recast will shrink about 1/8 inch per foot, so it won't be as tight a fit in the stove. Providing that it's not badly distorted out of shape, it should be usable as a pattern. If so, than that swollen firepot is now compensated from shrinkage in a recast pot.

Is the fire pot suspended by a single ring or is it 2 pieces?

Single ring. The pot is deformed enough that it cant be tipped up to get the screws out from underneath it. Going out there to do battle tonight after dinner. More to come.Pauliewog wrote:Is the fire pot suspended by a single ring or is it 2 pieces?

Leave the pot on the ring and take the top and at least one side off. If you can't get to a nut behind, or under the firepot the easiest way is to drill it out from the front. I first use a bit a little smaller than the screw.followed by one size up. You only have to drill the heads off.Scottscoaled wrote:Single ring. Paulie
Slide the firepot out with the ring attached.

Well it was almost impossible, but there was victory. Sorta. I got the beast apart and just as suspected, the pot isn't going to work. It is elongated and twisted. There are two spots that definitely are beyond use.

yeow !!
well, if you google "antique coal parlor stove" you should come up with 25 or so firms you can canvas for parts or chances to recast from units they may have.
best of luck,
steve

Post up some measurements cause I (and maybe others) might have something that could work for a recast.Scottscoaled wrote:Well it was almost impossible, but there was victory. Sorta. That's a great suggestion Mac.McGiever wrote:Post up some measurements cause I (and maybe others) might have something that could work for a recast.Scottscoaled wrote:Well it was almost impossible, but there was victory. Scott .....We're you able to remove it firepot from the ring?
I wonder if anyone here had a firepot pattern made using 3D printer technology. I would think if you took accurate measurements and put it on Cad it would be a viable option.

I wonder if a good pattern could be made from ceramic? A good potter might be able to do it. I don't think the fingers are necessary because lots of stoves work fine without them.
Another thought is a sheet metal form lined with fiberglass as a pattern. Easy to form the lip on top.

i'm going to go out on a limb here and say that I think the fingers are very much part of the functionality and efficiency of that stove.franco b wrote:I wonder if a good pattern could be made from ceramic? The fingers allow some ash to build up and still allow easier access for air through them. Probably help to clear ash also but also make it easier for a solid piece of coal to jam.KingCoal wrote:i'm going to go out on a limb here and say that I think the fingers are very much part of the functionality and efficiency of that stove.
In any case they could be cut later if wanted.

Funny how things have a way of coming together. I asked member Merc300d to keep an eye out for me for a 16 inch pot and doesn't he come thru! Tells me about a stove on Ebay that was the same as mine. Well I gave a deposit on the beauty tonight. It has a decent looking pot and a magazine. Oh boy! Time to put together a casting run. The stove I picked up needs a piece recasted also. This will work out beautifully. Two stoves. What the heck have I got myself into????? Thanks again Merc300d.
