I would leave the screen behind the draft opening as this is a clear opening and it is possible for a piece of exploding coal to jump out. Depending on the internal moisture some coal will crackle and explode from steam when it heats up. The mica I would not bother with a screen. William said he doubles up on the mica for increased strength.
