So if you can't get a base burner ( or your to cheap ), who makes the best oak stoves?
What makes them better?
What makes them better?
The Glenwood 114, 116 and 118 Modern Oaks with a complete and functional back pipe is one of the better alternatives. This is my first year burning coal and I'm very happy (OK< totally in love with) my 116. I've also got a No.6 Baseburner project that I'll eventually have going and will get a first hand comparison between the two types of stove.

Herald makes a great oak stove too. While base heaters and base burners do a great job, direct draft oak stoves put out a lot of heat and have long burn times as well. I heated a house last year with a Herald Oak No. 18. That thing radiated a lot of heat and wanted to run between 500-600 easily for 14-15 hours. 400-450 for a lot longer. Don't want you to think that direct draft stoves don't do a good job and they are easier on the wallet.

- Baseburners & Antiques: Glenwood Oak 40, Stanley Argand No. 30, Glenwood Modern Oak 114, Stanley Argand No. 20 missing parts.
- Coal Size/Type: Anthracite. Stove and nut size.
- Other Heating: Oil hot water.
Completely satisfied with my Glenwood Oak 40. Don't have a bad thing to say about it. Wish it had better living conditions, but the cellar works. It can make fun of the oil burner. Matt

If your running 500*- 600*, how hot is your flue pipe. Is that surface or probe temps for the flue.

I bought certified temp gauges. I use 2 mpd's as I have really good draft and putting them 18-24" apart allowed me to put more heat into the room rather than up the flue. Oak stoves have a cast iron fire pot and lower and then a steel/zinc barrel. The barrel is a certain height and circumference based on the fire pot. The barrel, instantly radiates the heat coming from the burning coal or wood. I used about 6-8 pieces of kiln dried 1x2 's from factory that has oak and pine. I get them going and then add coal. Within 5 minutes of lighting this fire I can get the stove temps to 600 with those 6-8 pieces of wood. That's why a barrel stove is such a great radiant heater. I used to burn wood, it took a long time for a wood fire to getting going hot enough to put out serious heat.

What is real difference between Glenwood #6 Baseburner and the 114 and 116 or 118?dhansen wrote:The Glenwood 114, 116 and 118 Modern Oaks with a complete and functional back pipe is one of the better alternatives. The Glenwood Modern Oak 112,114,116, and 118 are not base heaters.
While they have a back pipe similar to the #6 and #8 base heaters, their flue gases only travel down the front half of that back pipe, turn under a baffle plate, and back up the rear half to get to the chimney. The base casting that supports the weight of the back pipe on the Modern Oaks is not open to the stove's base. So, there is no additional heating of the stove base by flue gases like the base heaters do.
