I finally went through with it and I'm picking up a local coal franklin stove i found on facebook. Its in pretty decent condition and the price was right. No cracks or anything and ive become quite fond of these little guys. I'm hoping to get a fully restored one in the future but my wife didn't care for the lather large price tag that came with that so this guy will live in the parlor for the time being. It has some cracked mica but i would assume I will be able to fix that before the fall roles around.

very nice!
Are you going to move it inside as it is?
Or are you planning on doing anything more to it before moving inside besides replacing the mica?
It looks like it is in really good condition as is, as you already mentioned.
( more photos, please )

Hi , Beautiful ornate stove , looks similar to mine which we have in the spare bedroom. You might be surprised how much heat it produces! I paid £9 a sheet for mica 4”x4”. Mine is French but I think yours beats mine on looks 😀👍.

Congratulations! Do you know if it was manufactured by Mt. Penn Stove Works ? If so, I think you will be very pleased with its performance .

It has no other markings on it besides the size so I would assume that it was made by Mt. Penn and not a local contractor (tons of locally liscensed made stoves here in Maine). It has a little bit of surface rust, do you have any advice on cleaning that up?

I picked up a baltimore style fireplace heater made by the Mt Penn Stove Works, Reading, Pennsylvania that is very similar to your Franklin.

Home Depot or Lowes cary a spray on rust remover that works well. Its called Krust Cutter "A Must For Rust"

Spray it on, let it sit for a few minutes. Scrub it in lightly with a scrub brush, and rinse it off.

Perfect I will give that a try then. That Baltimore heater looks like an almost identical stove only with different trim based on if it is infront of a fireplace or in it. I'm still on the hunt for a Baltimore heater but they seem to go so fast or are literally a thousand miles away from me.

I got it home today! Its larger than I was picturing for sure. I'm going to wait till the fall to actually plumb it in and such. And to answer the question it was made at the Mt. Penn factory in Reading PA. The patent on it is 1889.

Love the copper details. Is it high temp paint or a type of coating ?

Very nice!

I have often wondered whether the Franklin type parlor stoves could rest on the base without the legs.
Does it look like your Penn Franklin requires the legs?
If not, are you thinking of leaving the legs on?

A do it yourself amateur effort. Similar terms could be "red neck" or "shade tree"
