Hand Fed Coal Stove: researching now

Post by jsplott » Sun. Dec. 23, 2018 10:10 pm

I have a wm 617 that I have been using for the past 2 winters and I have acquired a 414 I want to try. The bricks are different between the 414 and 617s and I'm not sure what the 414 bricks are supposed to like. Does anyone have any pictures of what a wm 414 fire bricks are supposed to look like? Are any available should I need any? Thanks

be very careful with your bricks. if you have a single good example of each the the shapes and sizes NOW is the time to make molds so you can recast others.

IF you find any new old stock bricks expect to pay $80+ each for them.

there was also a thread here where the smart fella made his own bricks with a miter saw of some kind including the corner chimneys, i'll try to find it.

in this thread Post by LBrookm - Warm Morning 617a

you will find some great info as well AND see how the very smart owner did his own bricks for very little money. this is THE saving grace for any of the square barrel warm mornings that are in decent shape except for old worn bricks.

best of luck,
steve

Thanks kingcoal and mcgeiver...looking at the pics posted of the new bricks it's very apparent that the lower bricks in my new to me 414a have been beat to death somehow. Maybe they chunked wood really hard into the stove repeatedly. The rest of the stove is in relatively good shape. After the holidays I will tear it down and start the rebuild. Thanks and Merry Christmas to everyone.

One more question...if I were to attempt to make my own replacement bricks would I need the soft type firebrick or the hard type? I have a pottery supply house about 30 miles east I could visit or do the hardware stores carry what I need? Thanks again for the responses.

Good afternoon Shannon, I sourced the firebrick from one of our local ready mix concrete suppliers. Basically the same brick one would line a stove with or build a fireplace and sold at hardware stores. It was a mix of full size (9"x4.5"x2.5") and split brick (9"x4.5"x1.25") trimmed with 4.5" angle grinder with a diamond masonry blade. Hope this helps,
Larry

Thank you LBrookm...that helps a lot. I was going to start sourcing some next week. Now I know exactly what to look for.
