How deep is the coal bed looks shallow i had same issues till i started filling it up to top of bricks?
About 1 in under the top.
I have a hard time loading it more then that with leaving a flame on one side if that makes sense

It looks that you have a rectangular coal bed , narrow and long front to back,

so load by pulling bed toward the door and fill the back as high as you can.

This will make you fire go from the door end back to the banked coal in the back

which would also burn off the volatiles from the slowly advancing burn.

I've been doing the exact opposite. Not sure if it matters what side you bank it to. My thought was the air would draw the fire to the front towards the new coals but not the other way around.

Is the firebox longer inward than wide ? Then front to back banking is better.

No its longer front to back. By opposite I ment pushing the old coals to the back of the fire box and the new coals at the front.
