Hey, corey.

Lightning, I think it's the same coal as previously but I got a consistent sized nut this time.
I had a heart to heart with my hauler before he brought the load.

I was worried that, if I necked it down too much, it would hinder combustion and, I don't know, increase a chance for carbon monoxide
As long as you get a mano reading of .02 your ok.

Thanks, corey.
As a long time reader, you remember that I have little faith in my mano.
I do look at it, though.

Make sure to zero your mano with it 100% level. Unhook the hose and turn the knob to zero it. Sometimes they need a little fluid added as it seems to evaporate some. Otherwise they are about useless.

Thanks for the info, warminmn.
I did that a couple weeks ago.

I'm just not a big believer in them.
I do use it as a guide but not a gospel

What are you expecting a manometer to show or do for you?

"What are you expecting a manometer to show or do for you?"

Not much.
I look at and when I can't raise it I figure it's time to clean the chimney

I'm getting from a coal tipple in Shelocta, Pa.
The owner of the tipple owns a mine.
I believe his name is Frailey and his mine is called Dutch Run

It's pretty decent coal if I can get nut coal.
My hauler is a local guy that does a little bit of general hauling.
Cheap.
He charged me $80 for 5 tons.

But, previous loads he brought me unscreened.
Load prior to this was full of fines.
I have an 18" floor in my coal bin of fines packing the coal in.

So far, I'm real satisfied with this load.
It seems to burn pretty clean; few clinkers, not a ton of ash.
And my house has been hot as Hades

Thanks, Jgib4.

Keeping in mind that I'm not the sharpest knife in the drawer, a lot of very patient help may have (finally) showed me how to operate this thing

Been a while since an update.

Sure seems like I've made a big dent in the coal pile already.
Just got 5 tons around 5 weeks ago.

I seem to fire almost the same whether it's 50 or 20.

I add 3 times a day and pretty much forget about it. Average of 5 shovels full each time.
About the only adjustments I make is the MPD and close it until smoke starts to come out.

The primary is only adjusted occasionally.

Someday, I may take Lightning's advice and do something with the grates and all the slop.
I have cracked the same brick twice so far.
Not sure if that's coincidence or some other reason.

Right now my only complaint is how much ash dust I get through the house.
Everything is always covered in it.

I change filters at least once a month

Thinking I should get the ducts cleaned this off season.

Overall, I'm fairly satisfied with the performance this year

Been a while so, an update.

It's not balmy in here.
Propane furnace is running constantly as well as the coal furnace.
Propane is set for 63 and in the warmest room in the house.

-8 last night and, presently, +1

Aren't they promising us global warming?
I'd like me some of that.
Don't see the downside from here.

I made a small change to my firing technique a few days ago to see if I could get more heat.

I opened the ash door damper wide open assuming that more air makes a hotter fire.
Also, putting less coal more often.

Putting 2-3 shovels full right in the middle of the fire box instead of banking during the day.
Assuming that I get more heat with keeping a hotter fire.

I seem to have used a lot of coal so far this year.
I may have about a ton left from the 5 tons I got in the middle of November.

Thanks

Nice to hear from you Larry. Sounds like your managing :) keep up the good work! I've been burning a lot of coal the last few days too.

As for the ash dust, are you dumping the ash pan into a container in the basement? Or do you take it straight outside?

Hey, Lee.
I dump into a bucket to let any hot coals cool and take the bucket out once or twice a day when full.

As far as usage, it's been steady.
Just seems like a little more than usual
