ok i went back to your pics and see that you have a MPD. i'd bet that one isn't going to do the job.

at this point i suggest getting a Manometer so you can see what your draft is doing. too little is just as bad as too much.

before you do much of anything else show us a pic of the MPD, and your stove primary and load door air adjusters in the position you had them during the last fire attempt.

There seems to be a learning curve, for sure

It's hard to put too much coal in because it doesn't consume it very fast.
It's more of a smolder than the burn I'm used to from my furnace.

The bottom half of the barrel is warm.
Certainly not hot.
Pipes aren't hot.

I can tell that it takes the chill off a little bit.
Maybe a tighter environment would make it better

I was able to get a 15 hour burn time.
That makes me happy

Merry Christmas Larry and all. You mentioned you closed drafts - how much? I’m finding mine likes a mostly closed mpd, some over fire draft open (1/2-3/4) and the under fire controls heat. I’m getting the impression it is just idling? Maybe comparing apples to oranges as I’m burning anth but getting barrel temps of 500+ degrees is not a prob. And it is amazing how much a mano helps - reminds me of my first set of specs and realizing trees actually have leaves instead of just being green blobs

"Idling" sounds like a good description.

Not sure if I'm dampering enough or too much.

I had my MPD more than 1/2 closed.
Tried secondary in multiple positions and the primary from all the way open to mostly closed.

After loading up last night @ 10 PM, I set the primary open just a corner, secondary @2/3 closed and the MPD more than 1/2.
That held the fire for 15 hours.
Although it was low, I think I could have built the fire back up without too much trouble.

after you have flames coming up the chimneys you should shut the secondaries and leave them closed. open up the primary till the "base" or short axis of the triangle is about 1/8 to 1/4" and close the MPD. the MPD is far from closed even at full 90*'s to the exhaust stream.

next time you can be around to watch try it and see how it goes.

Getting back to this after a hiatus.
I haven't been to the garage to fool with this in over a week because the stove won't heat the garage and we've been having highs of low teens to minus degrees.

I did follow your instructions and could tell there was a fire and the barrel got a little warm.
I've found that I need to open the primary a little more to get some heat.
Also, I need to, occasionally, open the secondary and MPD to warm it up.

I'm sure that some of the problem is the environment it's trying to operate in but the barrel seldom gets too hot to put my hand on it

I’m having similar issue with the little stove in the garage and unless I feed it coal and give lots of primary air there’s not much heat. It has to look like this inside to be warm.

I’m on quite a learning curve here and thanks much.

It's supposed to moderate here over the next few days and I hope to get back at it.
I agree and think more primary air may be part of the solution.

It is a learning curve and I will be experimenting

It was 32 today and I started the fire around 11 AM.

It took, maybe, up to 2 hours to get it completely up to speed and fill the magazine.

I had the primary open so that the top was at a 45.
Roughly, the top left corner of the door was at the lower left corner of the opening.

I had decent heat that I could notice when I opened the door to the garage to go in.

Per the instructions, the secondary was closed and the MPD closed half or a little more.
If I wanted to pick the fire up a little I opened the MPD.

It's supposed to go up to the 50s until Saturday when it will be 30 and Sunday 16.

Trying to decide whether to let it go out tomorrow and relight on Saturday or Friday.
It would be warm enough to work out there without it.

I'm interested in how much I can get out of the stove when it's colder.

I lit up this morning around 11.
It was near 50 but dropping all day.

I have it throttled back a little now because I'm not going to be out there.

It seems that I need at least 1/2 open primary air and a fairly open MPD to get any significant heat.
It's supposed to get pretty cold for most of the next week.
I'll keep at it for a couple days to see what I can get it to do
