Hand Fed Coal Stove: warm morning 400

Hi folks!
Been lurking a few weeks educating myself on coal burning. I'm new to coal burning and I thought my wood burning experience was worth something but not really huh!

Picked up a WM 400 in really good shape off CL for $75. A few cracks in the brick but not a big deal. The flutes and the rest of the lining have crisp low milage edges and grates have lots of life. Came with the fan but not shaker handle.

Great cache of experience here on using this stove so I'm up and running just need some fine tuning, adjust the bimetal stat, etc. Way happy with the results, I hate winter and spent 20 yrs in Phoenix,AZ where heating your home happens all by itself.

What I am in need of now is coal. I am between Poughkeepsie and Albany. Best place I've found so far is Cornwall, NY for bulk buying. Any other Apple Knockers have suggestions?

Also, what's a good size coal to burn in the WM400?

Thanks !

Hi Dremel, welcome to the forum. Are you planning on burning Bituminous or Anthracite?

I was thinking Anthracite coal to avoid any kind of sulfur stink or perhaps a mix. Whatever I can find that is cheap and I don't have to but and store 10 tons right now.

I have a Buderus hand fired boiler that I want to put in service too. Been splitting wood long enough !

Thanks,
Bill

You mentioned buying bulk coal from Cornwall. What are they selling?

Anthracite for $227 / ton. I don't think it mattered what size it was.

Had to make sure of which coal you were using. I'm not sure you could even get Bituminous in your area, if you could it would probably be the same or more in price.

Others that have mixed the two coals didn't have very good results as the two coals have very different burn characteristics.

Dremel, if you are between Poughkeepsie & Albany you cant be very far from me. I live about 6 miles off exit 20 NY T-Way. Bit doesn't exist here, however Cornwall seems to get high praises. There is also a member on here that lives in Greenville, NY who does bulk delivery believe he goes by justify003. I'll search & confirm. Other than that I heard there was a bulk dealer in Albany, but don't know the name. I get bagged Blasckak from a dealer in Catskill for $ 350 ton. Welcome & good luck.

I bought a ten ton load from him this summer that he brought up from Lehigh Anthracite. It worked out very good for me. Here is the thread that gives the information:

I have used a WM 400 for a number of years and can't say much bad about them. They pour out heat. I use a lot of stove coal in mine and when the temps get warm outside I use pea coal on top to slow the burn way down. If you're using anthracite, don't worry about the flues in the corners. I just let mine fill up so I just get bottom air. You can easily get 2 day burns in mild weather and the bi-metallic draft works great. Use a manual damper. Only thing I don't like is the rotating grate is slow and a pain as you need to poke from the top. Mike

Thanks Coalturkey.

Lots of good information in your reply. I found a thread about adjusting the bimetal draft control but I still don't have it quite right. Is there another spring assist in the draft door hinge itself? It seems like the bimetal spring doesn't have the hurumph-umph to push open the draft door. Instead of opening the draft door the bimetal spring just bends and/or the "rod" that goes to the door bends. Either that or the draft control knob pushes itself up. Any sage advice on that ?

Manual damper installed...

As far as output, yeah it does pour out the heat !

Thanks,
Bill
