Well trying this for know and don't know if it will harm any thing on the stove.
I am forced to add two 5gal pails of coal at a time to the stove on refill's as its been so cold and I am gone 10 hrs at a time.
I leave the direct draft handle up all the time feels it heats better but the exhast flue pipe gets soo hot when I add that much coal at a time.
the flue ports on the stove sound like the after burners on a jet and that's got to be a lot of heat being wasted.
I turned out the two screws holding the cover plate over them and added some fiberglass insulation to cover the holes and seal them shut. Then added some more for the cover plate to hold it all in place.
I then did a reload and so far this has worked great nice easy temp climb and no over heated flue pipe and
no puffs from the stove.
I now do use the spin draft on the loading door in place of the flue pipe ports to burn off the volitas seamd to work great andy body else try this?

If I'm understanding this right.. You sealed the primary combustion air (air vents on the ash pan door) and are only feeding the fire with secondary air?? (over the fire air)

No that would be wrong on the hitzer there is a bimetallic flaper on the back of the stove that keeps the stove at steady temp.
The ports that I am refering to are on the right side of the stove just above the down draft chimny they are there to burn of the coal gases.
You cant ajust them the are drilled holes allwas open.
They work too good and it dumps directly into the exhast flue not doing the stove any good.
Heats up the flue to 900 degres in no time.

The door on the hitzer has a over fire air spinner.
Exhast flue temp's 160 *
Stove temp of 400*
MPD is all but closed.
Seems to be doing well.

I don't know the answer but is this with sub-bit or the good Kentucky bit you burn?

My Dad thought his 55UL burnt better with the direct draft open too when he burns bit, but he is real inexperienced with bit.

Hi casino_boy, the description of your stove mentions it as a multi fuel unit and it reminds me of a rite-way style heater therefore those vents may be needed if you choose to burn wood to burn the gases that is released. If not most of the BTU value will definitely exit the flu ...my .02

This is with the sub bit coal .
I am all most out of the kentucky 3 x 6 good bit coal this winter.
Winter wheather has taken it toll on it all but gone.
I used it on the -20 deg days and 18 hr plus days that I would be gone and no one to refill the stove.
cheers

Well for a update it works great but it slowly builds up on the flue wall had to take the fiberglass plug out from time to time to heat up the stove pipe to burn it out.
Dont know what to try next.
Seams such a wast to have all that heat just go up the flue pipe.
Too bad the down draft flue wasnt on the opposite side of the load door then adding a inclosed camber ubove the fire brick bed for the downdraft flue to dump its heat into to reclaim some of the heat befor exiting the stove would have been nice.

Well this year I bought a semi load of bit coal from samson wont run out.
It doesnt go nucler as fast but trying to do some thing differnt.
When I go to reload the coal I poke the coal to drop the pile down then open the ash pan door.
(I need to in order to shake it down) I then empty the pan and leave the door open to fill my pail.
Add coal then close it up don't take more than 5 10 minutes to do this.
Shut the load door and wait till it gets back up to temp (half hour or so) then close the internal damper.
The flue temp is still higher than I like but it doesnt go crazy on me like it did before.
I allso did have a stove pipe leaking air and used some furnace cement on it really helped I think.
I cant use the mpd on it becuse it will smoke up the house in time.
Ma gets cranky when that happens.
Will try a baro in time if I think that I am wasting to much coal.
buy having the internal damper close to force the exhast out through the down draft flue it is slowind down the
draft some I think.
Have yet to get above 200 to 250 stove temp to keep the house warm 72
Great coal so far time will tell.
Cheers

Ok got this solved I threw the hand damper in the junk pile set the stove at .02 draft with a good baro and my over heating was a thing of the past.
It will still get as high as .04 when first adding the bit coal but that it will settle down after a while it is burning off the volities.
And it will throw the heat set that way really inpressed with the stove now.
Cutt coal usage way down no more running back home with a smoke filled house and a angry wife.
Just lots of great heat wish I wasnt so slow to figure it out.
Hand damper worked great with the sub bit but not the good kentuky bit.
Where pumping heat out now.

Neato, just keep a tooth brush handy to clean the backside of the baro door. As soot and fly ash accumulate, the baro's calibration will change.

What size flue pipe are you running? I would use 8".

Now that you have the draft under control, did you open those two air holes on the side of the stove again? Maybe try just one.
