I usually clean it each year but since using strictly anthracite is it necessary every year ?
I had maybe 3 small dry lumber scrap burned last year to start the coal.
Last year when I cleaned it had just loose black powder soot not really any kind of creosote.
Just looking for opinions.

My father in law's house was built in 1873 (or so.. ) and as far as I know, has never had the chimney cleaned. Been burning anthracite since day one. Chimney has a little dust on it from the fly ash, but other than that, it's spotless.

Been burning coal since the 80s. Chimney hasn't needed cleaning yet.

Kind of what I was thinking. I do have 2 offsets in it. Only thing I can think is possibly a little fly ash build up in those?
I have no issues though.

If you have the time and ability, check the offset at the very least. It's a lot easier to check everything and deal with issues at the current temps.

How much of an offset? Unless it is substantial I wouldn't expect my flyash to accumulate there.

An annual cleaning is good insurance against other problems though - like a birds or bees nest.

That's nothing. Hit it quickly with a brush and then you know like rob said, no bees or bird nests.

Thanks. Also have a very small 30° in the single wall just above to stove. But that’s coming apart when I add the baro damper so it will get a cleaning too.

I do mine every year need it or not. Hell, I bought the brush set up--why not use it. M, that off-set shouldn't matter in the least.

Perhaps an inspection via a scoping every year..I do (or try to do, hey I'm lazy) that every year but have only cleaned it once (w/o scoping so I don't know if it needed it).

Obstructions will be found like bee hives or bird's nest like Rob noted or if a horse fell into the top of the chimney.

The horse getting in is common I better check for that.
