Hey guys. I have someone on a Facebook group telling me that I should not have put a baro damper on my Gibraltar mcc. He’s saying they are only safe for automatic coal stoves. He’s been arguing that a hand fired stove is going to backdraft and I’ll have a hard time keeping it burning. I’m coming here to ask if I should be worried or remove it before i get my first burn going?

Your facebook friend is full of bit coal!
On handfires they are often used on stoves that dont have a bimetalic air intake... and sometimes used on stoves that have them, but usually not needed then. There are exceptions to everything.
A stove with just slots for air intake, if the chimney drafts real well, can overfire without a baro. Im in that situation but many with a steady low draft still dont need one. You have it so put it on or leave it on. You can always put a cap over it or tin foil if not needed. At least you wont have to add one later then.
Some people use 2 manual pipe dampers, some just one, some use just a baro, some use a baro and a manual pipe damper. Whatever works best on your stove in your situation is the best option. Only you can figure that out.
Without rereading this whole post, a manometer is awful nice for setting up a new stove whether you leave it on or not. Saves a whole lot of guessing.

As a gamer there is a word that we typically place in front of the word randoms. It's obviously NSFW.midnightmadman29 wrote: ↑Thu. Nov. 02, 2023 4:47 amBtw. He’s not a friend just some random guy on coal and wood burning group.![]()
