I have a large coal bin with walls made of filled concrete block. I burn nut coal and have never loaded my bin more than 1/2 full. In the past I have put down a ruff cut 2 by 6" at the opening to make sure I do not make a mess.
The door opening is 32" and I'm thinking I will need to block up the door to about waist high.
What thickness boards do I need to get?

Stay with the rough cut 2x. Depending on how full you go, you can get a fair amount of weight. Besides, I'm guessing the rough cut will be cheaper.
My thought if 1 by should work then the ruff cut stuff would be better and have a bunch of it laying around.
My bin has 3 loading doors and I have never filled it to the point I used the loading door closest to the boiler. I have a dual axle dump truck loaded and my dump trailer loaded with coal that I need to empty.
