Advice on painting chimney
Hi,
I am going to be replacing my roof. I would like to paint this chimney that goes to my oil boiler. I would have to assume that it is galvanized. The metal seems solid so I would like to paint it. Any advice is appreciated.
Thanks!

I swore by rust oleum professional it works great on steel sticks like glue however I painted my chicken coop roof it was newer galvanized and it’s peeling after one year. Your chimney looks like the paint should have something to grab to my coop roof was still shiny.

Newer galvanized you have to scrub first with something. I think white vinegar works but not positive. Shiny galvanized the same thing.
Zinc oxide primer as an undercoating on regular paint might help it from rusting a little??? but no promises with coal plus its already rusted.
40 years ago I painted a small galvanized building roof and sides with some cheap paint and its still good. Wish I remembered what I used! lol

Understand that galvanization is a zinc coating, that once stripped reveals the vulnerable metal. At this point you will need to determine whether things are too fargone. Also, sanding/disturbing/welding on galvanized metal requires adequate ventilation since it does release toxins (zinc is a low melting point metal that is not good to breathe) so you might not want to get crazy about sanding it. Not sure if the same paint will want to adhere to galvanization and slightly rusty steel, that's a question for the pros, but I painted my Jeep with rustoleum and a roller and it never peeled or chipped!

I don't think the top of the chimney will get to hot but good luck getting paint to stick to galvanized.

Scrub shiny galvanized surface with white vinegar before priming.
Rustoleum makes “rusted metal” primer made with fish oil, it is brownish. Also makes a clean metal primer it is grayish.
To avoid fading due to sun exposure look to outdoor paint with UV protection built in rather than generic paints that would fade in a couple seasons.
For rust removal I like a 4-1/2” right angle grinder with a cupped-knotted wire wheel brush.

I would NOT go all nutzo on cleaning--I have used medium steel wool with satisfaction getting the worse of the rust off & then rustoleum--to much heavy-duty cleaning could make things worse!!
