I have a flue insert that was installed for a wood stove years ago. Switched to coal about 6 yrs ago liner is deteriorating wondering if i should put proper liner of stainless 316 L or use chimney without liner? flue liner is 8x 12 had chimney fire when burning wood. Using a Koker furnace would it be ok to use chimney without liner or line it? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

look up & down inside chimney--if it looks OK--screw the liner!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Can't imagine anything being wrong with mason chimney, fire or no fire!! :)

Mortar joints should be sound, Tight cracks in terracotta with no lost pieces can work.

Coal will have its way with 316L...there are better alloys availible in liners.

YEP, let's complicate the hell out of it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :( J, even in my 200 yr old farmhouse--the chimney is in good enough shape to use. Just ask SMITTY about chimneys!! IF, ya get a chimney sweep, you'd better trust their judgement cause unfortunatly they have become not much better then insurance salesmen$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ Just an old farmers thoughts. Sorry F, just the way of things in this day & age.
