How much in tons, would this tote hold?
Someone told me about 1 ton = 3/4 full.
I am just trying to figure out for some of my coal storage.

It will hold one ton.
I rather crudely determined this by assuming that a plastic 5 gallon pail actually holds ~5.6 gallons, and also holds ~41 pounds of coal.
275 x 41/5.6 = 2,013 pounds.

My old bin was 4 x 4 x 8 and would easily hold 3 tons. 128 cubic feet. Hope this helps.

Weight by volume varies across different coal sizes, but maybe that's not important...

I guess I will need to get rough measurements of the tote and figure out how many cubic feet there is in them. The breaker guy at DiRenzo's filled up the tote about 90% to the top.I asked him if that was a ton and he said it should be. That was pea. He then filled up a second tote of nut, but than he only filled up about 3/4 full. He said he didn't trust filling anymore due to the coal bouncing out. When I weighed out, it was about 300 lbs short of two tons. But I was just wondering if what he said was true.
So I can assume that a full tote is about one ton?

275/7.480543 = 36.762 Cubic Feet
That's more than enough to hold a ton of coal if 36 cubic feet will hold one ton. But it will be more than 3/4 full.

Like Pauliewog said above, I too get just over 1 ton per tote. This was after we had used some through the season last winter.

I noticed you cut gates into the bottom. I did the same. I also cut out the top and left about an inch or so around the lip, that way it keeps some reinforcement to the top. The only thing I didn't do was to build the top up like you did.Seagrave1963 wrote: ↑Mon. Dec. 21, 2020 8:32 amLike Pauliewog said above, I too get just over 1 ton per tote. That may be why you get a little more than a ton in yours.

It seems counterintuitive (and that's why I still don't fathom it) but I believe that the larger the chunks the more the filled pail (or any other filled volume) weighs. Therefore, if ~2,041 Lbs. of Pea will fit into a 275 gallon space, something more than that will fit for Nut. See Paulie's post above.
But over the years I've had Pea coal that only weighed ~37.5-38 Lbs. in a 5 gallon (~5.6 gallon actual) plastic pail, and I've had coal that weighed ~42.5-43 Lbs. in the same pail. It depends upon the vein it is mined from.
