Buck and rice, think I went 5 and 5 that year. That was the last year I used the totes because I like the ease of handling with the super sacks.

Ah, I just thought of something. As for all containers made to transport liquids, 275 gallons is the D.O.T. legal max fill level and not the total capacity, which will always be somewhat greater than DOT.

It's the same for 55 gallon drums. They are DOT 55 gallon, but they will hold ~58-59 gallons.

And a DOT 5 gallon plastic pail will hold ~5.6 gallons.

Etc...

Thanks Larry..... You beat me to the punch.

There are also two common sizes of these IBC totes. A 250 gallon and a 275 gallon with the most common one in my area being a 250.

The fill line on a 250 gallon tote is about 6" down from the top of the cage

Up the side of a 250 gallon tote there are graduation marks in gallons and liters. Near the top they are 3-1/2" apart. That 3-1/2" equals 25 gallons of liquid.

I cut most of my totes off 3- 1/2" above the 250 gallon fill line.

If some of our members are filling actual 275 gallon totes above the fill line, that may account for the differences in weight.

I aquire and sell about 50 of these totes a year. Some people purchase them for coal bins, firewood storage, scrap bins, drain oil, farm animal feeders, off grid septic systems, rain water storage, Hydroponic tanks, showers. Even had a guy stack two for a duck hunting blind. :D

There's a 330 gallon also, 275 and 330's are the most common. My brother in law's have a large farming operation and they go through a lot of those so I can get them for free but I have not taken the time to fabricate a easy way to unload them. I would really like to find a fork rotate attachment that I could fabricate on my Bobcat, that would be ideal. I just haven't came up with a good way of adding a door for material to fall out.
