I havent been in my attic in about 15 years. Its only accessable by putting a ladder in my outside basement stairwell and going up through a window they left for entry. Its a bit troublesome so i just never go up there.

Im in the process of putting in a class a chimney so i went up there yesterday and i noticed the chimney has a pretty serious arc to it. Its been so long since i was up here last i dont recall if it was like that before. Its not cracked anywhere. Is it common for masonry chimneys to settle like this or could it have been built that way? Nothing else in this house is straight or square.

I still need to use it for my coal furnace. The class a is for a second stove.

We built a ranch house in 1978. The chimney started straight up in the basement, located where it needed to be in relation to the furnace. As it went through the first floor and attic the mason offset the blocks gradually as they went up so they would come out of the roof between the trusses. Result was no trusses were disturbed. Maybe that's what you've got going on?

Lots of old chimneys were built with an offset. This usually allowed the chimney to miss the upstairs hallway but still exit through the peak.

There is an offset in the basement portion. Maybe this is the same situation.

Got the ceiling support in. It was a bear. Thought i cut the hole to the right dimension. It was too small. Had to keep chipping away at it with the sawzall until it fit. Once that plaster lathe has a hole cut in it, it doesnt like having small portions cut away from it.

Gotta paint those screws black.

I can't tell if the mason tried to miss that truss, or if it is leaning.

Is it plumb above the roof?

Did they predict a twister? Looks like you have one! Odd, for sure.

My buddy Scotty has a 200 year old house.... don't know if the chimneys are original, but there are two in the cellar & one going out the roof! Yup.... they make an upside down Y in the attic and connect the two into one. He's been using it for coal for two seasons now, The "other" has all openings sealed off.

Yeh ive always thought a couple of drunks built this place. Everything is crooked and cobbled together.

It is square above the roof.

If square above the roof, I think they just tried to miss that truss. If it looks structurally sound I would sleep easy.

fig, any brick or block masonry that has shifted will have telltale cracks in the mortar joints that run both horizontally & vertically.
And will look like horizontal Z's in the joints. From the pics, your chimney appears quite sound, & is most likely just the product of hillbilly corbeling. Nothing to worry about.
