Sorry if this a re-post but I couldn’t find any threads or comments so feel free to remove if it is!

So I am mulling over tons of ideas for a coal bin and the size I want to build - however as I’m looking through Facebook I see someone selling a Metal Job Box for a great price and the measurements are 46hx30dx48l which is about 38cf.

I’d be storing one ton of pea coal in it. Are there any reasons to not use metal or some storage of this type for storing the coal? Just looking for some pitfalls that I may not know about yet since this is my first year.

TIA

Joe

I'd personally paint the inside with some type of undercoating after roughing it up a tad--gonna be lots of shoveling involved with that idea. I'm bettin ya can come up with something better with removable slats for easier access to coal.

Fred, wouldn't coal eventually rust that box out? & I'm quite sure Cornwall Coal sells wood coal bins or just a set of plans for those who are handy.

They only sell 3 ton or larger bins for $500+. That’s not currently in the budget right now and I have found a bunch of plans and I could definitely build one.

It was more of a I can get that job box for $75 and not have to put anything together. Lol

Yeah I know it’ll rust out eventually - I was just looking to get 3-5 years out of. It’s going to be kept in my garage out of the elements.

If you were to use "oiled" coal, it'd probably last a really long time :)

Coal can be really wet upon delivery hense most the reason it would rust out.

If ya elevated it a bit you could put a chute of some sort on it...
6" pvc, 45* angle and a gate on it...
High enough it could go right in a 5 gallon bucket...
Set of heavy duty casters...
Rolling in the garage...
Spray in side with a rust preventative and kept dry in the garage it would last years...

Find yourself a used IBC tote, usually some on sale on craigslist or evilbay for less than 75. Cut a hole in side where appropriate, or chop the top out. Won't rust
