Here is someone who broke down on Christmas Eve. Pea coal is the size.
We have three local coal yards close by. But, we are 1.5 hours away from any coal breaker.
I wonder how far they got before they broke down and where they bought it.

I have been on both sides of that coin. Sometimes you got to do the best you can with what you have. I would agree safety first, and about half as much coal. Used to use an old snowmobile trailer before I built the tandem axle dump I have now, with really good tires and a spare attached.

That's cause ya haven't learned how to tinker Q. ;) Other then tires, hell, I'd take it & it'd probably last longer then me!! LOL

Trailers always make me leery when pulling them. Ive owned a few vehicles where i can see the road through the floorboards but towing a ratty trailer with a load, no thanks.

I just had to post this photo to the forum. I agree with safety but.... feel bad for the guy that didn't get his coal home.
Fortunately it didn't look like anyone scooped any coal off today when I went past.

i have done some sketchy things in the past to get a load of coal home to the garage when i lived there.
one time we used a 4x4 bush truck with a tarp in the bed to hold the coal in place. we made it home from the coal breaker but slid on the ice in the driveway and ended up stuck in the woods. had to shovel a ton of coal into 5 gallon pails and hike it out lol.

oh here is a really good one. not involving coal hauling but 2b stone for the shop driveway (the stone did have coal in it lol)
my roommate borrowed his father in laws 3/4 ton truck and dump trailer so we could haul stone for the driveway.
first load, leaving the quarry very full. the hitch came off the truck and the trailer tongue hit the quarry road. someone installed the hitch with low grade bolts.
i got the call to come help so i took his wifes 99 f-150 over there. we decided to take the trailer home with the f-150.
we had to put the f-150 into 4wd low to make the hill on route 901. it was a scary drive home.

That is an old boat trailer. A boat that size would not weigh very much so obviously that trailer was not intended to carry that much weight and those tires are probably from the Nixon administration. He was lucky as were the other motorists on the road near him that all that happened is he pulled over with a flat. Hope he was warm Christmas though.

I live near a scrap yard and have seen plenty of loads that make that trailer look good. I swear people consider it a challenge to see how many cars they can fit on a single trailer and set new records for the height. Heck I hauled a combine (pull behind type) minus the axle with a 1950 Ford flatbed pickup. All I had to do was take the chain off that held it onto the bed it it tipped down as more hung off the truck than what was on it, lol You do what you gotta do.

See some real winners come in the driveway here. Some I pray that they get back out on the highway before they chit the bed. Most of the manufactured trailers are pure junk, cheap steel and no paint prep during assembly. They come in here brand-new and 3 years later the sides are rotted through and most of the paint is now gone.

Not a week goes by that we don’t turn the air compressor on to air up some tires. They are inflated when they leave home and then get a load put on here and it’s sitting on the rim.

I noticed today they are replacing both tires and rims now.
It's up on blocks with jacks
Luckily no visible coal stolen since it broke down Christmas Eve.
