Over time it may cause it to rust. My uncle's garage has a painted steel roof and a coal burning stoker for heat. The prevailing winds are usually from the west and the roof is rusted east of the chimney. The effect is very noticeable when you look at it. The roof is probably 25 years old or more and it is still good, the corrosion is not that severe.

It's possible the type of coal application plays a factor here, I'd imagine a stoker is going to be blowing a a lot more fly ash out the chimney?

I think the finish on the metal will be the determining factor. Galvanized, enameled, rubberized?????

Five years out on my standing seam metal roof with a coal fired chimney adjacent to it and it's good so far. There is some pitting on the chimney flashing but that part gets dripping water from the chimney cap.

I've replaced metal roof panels 3 times due to fly ash. If you want pictures, the panels I took off are still laying on the ground out near the shop.

That seems strange. Does the roof have minimal pitch? Galvanized?oliver power wrote: ↑Sat. Jul. 27, 2019 10:50 pmI've replaced metal roof panels 3 times due to fly ash. If you want pictures, the panels I took off are still laying on the ground out near the shop.

It does seem that way, doesn't it Fred. Have to make an off season day. Is it your big barn? The one where you had the 60' lift?
