would it be safe to remove/clean the stovepipe without putting out the fire? I burn rice anthracite in a keystoker coal/oil burner/boiler.

I made the switch to Stainless going from the Stove to the chimney last year. Local Amish make it for CHEAP. The 90* elbow and 6ish feet of pipe single wall with manual pipe damper was $45. I broke the cardinal rule and did not clean my stove last spring. 2 weeks ago i finally cleaned everything before I had a wood fire in it. That Stainless cleaned up shinny and bright. I also use rivets in the pipe connections. The screws were always needing to be replaced each year and I like the clean look of the Rivets way better.

Do not work on the flue while the unit is running. Carbon monoxide is oderless and will over come you very quickly.

How fast can you do it?
Probably safer to let the fire go out first.

Thanks, all. I mean, I kind of figured. Just trying to avoid having to relight the coals

Some 30 years ago a stove dealer gave me a simple method as to how to preserve flue/stove pipe after shut-down. I put a lighted 100 watt incandescent bulb in the pipe through the port where the damper would mount after vacuuming the ash. The heat from the bulb keeps the gasses from becoming hydrated and forming corrosives. The pipe goes through the brick and mortar chimney damper. Haven't changed/removed the pipe or damper in the last 15 years. By the way, I couldn't be more pleased with the dealer Candy's Coal. Excellent service, very good low ash coal, very reasonable price. My stove is a Surdiac, Belgian air tight which I've had for the last 35 years. Nothing compares to the warmth.
