So I have a fireplace and will be putting a coal insert in, can I remove the fire brick for additional clearance or does the fire brick have to stay inside the fireplace?

What insert are you using...
Most don't need additional clearance...
Why do you think you need more clearance...
In a true fireplace the firebrick is semi structural...

Not sure how to post pictures, but I wanted to remove the bottom ones so the insert would sit lower and give me more clearance to the mantel. It will work as is, but I was hoping to get another 2”(story of my life). Didn’t really think about it being structural, but after looking at it some more i can see that they probably are.

Did the 503 at the parents house...
if needed a small curved heat shield will work for a projected mantle...
