First post, been reading for a while but I felt I should join to get my questions answered correctly. I live in South Jersey and not a lot of people burn coal here, the house I grew up in we had a Saey and I always thought it burned better than the wood stoves. Anyways I have a wood insert I want to replace with the DS coal insert. I currently have an 8” ss liner in the mason chimney, I would rather not use a liner, but I have been told by the dealer that I need one, and he recommended an insulated 6” for this stove. Would I be able to use the 8” or should I get the 6” he suggested, or use the mason chimney unlined. The chimney is in the center of the house, so I want to be sure it is safe and efficient. Thanks in advance.

J, seems the biggest reason dealers push liners is for the $$$$--most people just use the clay liners with good results. I'd use the 8" until it falls apart which normally they do in time. Coal ash seems to be tough on them. Your dealer will probably say they won't install without buying the 6"??? but there's some good installers out there.

Thanks for the reply, I’ll be doing the install myself so no worries on him not wanting to

How big is the chimney flue - 8" square? Too big a flue in the chimney could make it tough to get a good draft. Does it have a clay liner that isn't broken up?

If the clay liner is in good shape and it is no bigger than an 8" square I would take out the SS liner from the start. As FF said it will probably fail at some point from the coal exhaust and rather than have bits and pieces for years to come making it a mess to get out..... take it out now.

Im not familiar with the DS machine, however in my area many houses have many brands of stokers and boilers in 10-12 inch brick chimneys with no liners and it works well...

My liner is close to 13x13, it is in the center of the house so it should stay a little warmer as opposed to an external chimney. Not sure if that would be ok for draft being that size.

With the inside chimney it should be good to go...
Without the SS liner...
We put a hitzer 503 insert in my parents house...
External chimney on north side, always smoked as a regular fireplace...
The 6" insulated ss line was needed to make the coal insert go...
Made a huge difference in the cold chimney...
Inside chimney will always draft better...

Please do come back and report your findings. It helps others to learn what can really work and to likewise avoid unnecessary expense when having already a sound interior chimney.
