Let's see....instead of carrying buckets of coal forever, you are going to carry buckets of dirt & rocks until your arms are an inch longer, then, not carry any buckets any more? I love the idea!!

Yup..... I'd want to know how the porch floor is attached to the house. If it was just poured up against the foundation you may need a support on each end as well as one in the middle.

Linda's house in PA has a BIG wrap around porch that is poured concrete with zero posts. It sits ON the foundation on the house edges.

Are you going to put anything on the ceiling? The last thing you want is come of that crushed stone falling into the coal and causing a jam in your auger.

We have discussed a few different options and the one I keep coming back to would be to parge it with a masonry cement of some kind to smooth it over. I’ve been going across it with a hammer and knocking out all the loose stones I can find, the large ones too. If I wash it down really good, the rough surface should give it some good “teeth” for the cement to latch onto. I’ve seen this done on another coal bin I deliver to... it was a “dugout” porch as well.

It does not sound like a very fun job, I have trouble looking overhead for long durations now anyway. I think the key will be getting the mix just right - runny enough to work around easily and fill up the holes, but firm enough to stay put.

You could get an insulation spray foam kit & spray that on the "ceiling"...that would help keep it warmer inside there & less tendency for coaled feet while sitting on the porch.

Some rigid foam board might be a simple solution.

Make it so it JUST slides off the trowel--skimmed the stone walls in my basement. Not over-head but close enough Tyler.

One other thought that came up, and one that I loved the hell out of, was to flag down the crew that does the silo shotcrete and have them do their thing as they come by. They would be in and out in 10 minutes, but I am doing this on the cheap and for some reason seem to think I can save a buck. (Riiiiiiight)

I thought about the insulation yes, and even just cutting 4x8 sheets of plywood to fit up. I am just apprehensive about anything in there that can draw damp and hide critters behind it. I don’t like critters.

I like Robs idea, foam board and a few tap cons with fender washers

Maybe use some wire lath. You could shoot it up or drill and Tapcon.

Ima bet grandmas bloomers that the slab rests on the brickledge in the foundation. There is one all the way around the house , I cant imagine they skipped it where the porch is. If your worried about the slab giving way, youve never had to break up concrete, rebar or not! If it came outta of a readymix truck> rock on!

It’s funny you ask Benny, work actually resumes on it this afternoon for the first time in multiple weeks. An entire series of different events sucked up all my Saturday afternoons and work has been hell on wheels lately. The one Saturday that I would have been able to do anything with it I was too tired and cold to go through the motions so spent that time in the recliner beside the cast iron radiator instead!

I blame it on my helpers... they are members of the Loysburg Diggers Union and they walked off the job when I refused to honor their contract. They demand more Yeungling Lager. Dirty bastards anyhow.
