When I moved into my house I had a coal stove. However I replaced it with a pellet stove.

On the side of my house is a shoot installed where they put the coal.

I still have coal in there. My questions are:

1. Do people actually buy coal that would come out of there?

2. Could I ever clean out the shoot enough to store pellets there? I know the coal is so dirty.

1. Yes you can buy bulk coal that goes thru the chute.
2. Your firstistake was getting rid of the coal stove for pellets :). You can clean it out but it will be a dirty job. I don't of anyone that sells bulk pellets that you would use the chute for

You can get the coal oiled, and it keeps the dust down. Most coal deliveries can deliver using the chute, my deliver guy uses a 10' auger pipe and shoots it right into my coal bin in the basement. works pretty slick. He has used a chute on the back of his dump truck if his auger is down.

Is the coal stove still in the home? Sell that and include the coal

That tells me you're in coal country
I still have coal in there. My questions are:
It's been in the ground for 300 million yrs, it won't go bad
1. Do people actually buy coal that would come out of there?
You normally pay someone to take filth out of your home ;)
2. Could I ever clean out the shoot enough to store pellets there? I know the coal is so dirty.
If your pellets get wet you're screwed...that's dirty!
edit:
Are you one and done?
edit:
coal chute...couldn't help it

I think it's reasonable to say that anyone who confuses chute for shoot has been deceptively misinformed about coal. Just sayin...

Well we haven't heard back from a new member  ...and I'm wondering if we ever will. Some folks join post a question and fail to converse. Why would s/he, coal is dirty ;)

My Grandmother used to say, "there is nothing so bad that there isn't any good in it." In this case if someone wants to burn pellets instead of coal then that leaves a little more for us that appreciate it ;)

Not being mean Fred, would enjoy a good talk about his or her's options. As you said location would be helpful...some truth about coal would be helpful as well.

Y'all might have stumbled into some UAE coal, and now nobody will every know!

However, how many times must one shoot stove coal to make the size they need? Does a 12ga go straight to rice? Or is this like pumpkin chunkin where you launch a hunk of coal through a cannon? I would watch either of those.

But seriously to the OP, if you give a location, someone may be willing to help you get rid of it. Probably not worth much in a basement though
