got a deal on a never fired coal stove and new in the box class a chimney.
the kit is for running inside the building and up thru the roof. i am putting this stove in the basement, so i am going thru the wall to the outside. i would need to order about 180 dollars in accys (wall brackets, base, roof support kit) to install this chimney.
then i have to find help to put it thru the roof at the eave. my neighbors wood stove chimney runs outside the eave on the outside of the gutter, but it is crooked and looks bad. i'm not real fond of being on a pitched roof near the edge.
if i order a powervent, i just need to knock a hole in the basement wall and install it.
looking for advice either way.
the class a chimney i can use when my pole barn is built, going to heat that with my alaska and coal trol.

Well..... You can not use a power venter with a coal stove. Some rice burning stokers come with a direct vent, but that's a whole different story. When you say "never fired coal stove", I assume it's a hand fed stove that burns nut size coal. If that's the case you must have a "regular" chimney. You see, with a power venter, if the electricity goes out, the fire keeps burning and fills the house with deadly Carbon Monoxide (CO). With the stoker rice burners and a direct vent, if the electricity fails, the fire goes out quickly & no CO develops.

Is the 'never fired coal stove' a stoker or a hand fed? Either way, it's best to go with the chimney for several reasons.
One: you can't vent a hand fed on power-vent. Fuel will continue to burn unvented when there's a loss of electricity*.
Two: Chimneys function for either stove and for the *hand fed when the power is out.

Stove or Stoker, clarifying what you have would clear the confusion for those of us who have yet to see any pictures of the ? Stove .. ? Stoker ?lincolnmania wrote: ↑Mon. Nov. 06, 2017 10:24 pmnot hand fed it's a rice fed stove. never been used, 1987 crane.

Its a Crane stoker, a rare one. I think he mentioned it in an old Crane stove post also. If I hadnt seen that post I'd still be unsure myself.
Other than hopefully clarifying that, I am no help with your power vent question.
